The Alberta Securities Commission has partnered with Junior Achievement in their search for talented, energetic and professional individuals willing to volunteer and share their knowledge with our next generation of financial leaders.

Junior Achievement (JA) is a not-for-profit organization that specializes in teaching students about business, financial literacy and the importance of staying in school. All programs are delivered by industry professionals who volunteer with students in their schools. Any school in Alberta is eligible to receive free programs through JA.

With JA holding programs in classrooms across the province, there is sure to be an opportunity to volunteer in your community. There are many volunteer positions that you can consider such as:

Financial Literacy Mentor with the Dollars with Sense Program:

  • Dollars with sense is an interactive program designed to encourage Grade 7 and 8 students to develop the financial literacy necessary to make informed decisions about their financial futures. Students are provided with the important tools they need to make better economic decisions while learning about budgeting, money management and investments.
  • Volunteers attend a 1.5 hour training (various times) and commit to at least two full morning deliveries of four hours.

Investment Mentor with the Investment Strategies Program (southern Alberta only):

  • The Investment Strategies Program consists of learning activities and an on-line stock market simulation that introduces Grade 8 and 9 students to the world of investment. This fast-paced, interactive program gives students hands-on experience with the stock market and ultimately enables them to become savvy investors.
  • Volunteers attend a two hour training (various times) and commit to five different one-hour classroom visits.

Why volunteer? Volunteering can make a difference in the life of a young person and gives you the opportunity to mentor young people who may become part of our workforce in a few years.  JA is always in need of more volunteers to help sustain their programs and will provide you with the tools and training you’ll need to succeed in the classroom!
