Have questions about investing? You’re not alone.

Last month we ran the Everything you always wanted to know about investing, but were afraid to ask contest as part of Investor Education Month. Albertans could submit their questions about investing via the web or Twitter and have a chance to win a BlackBerry® 16GB PlayBook with Wi-Fi.

Interested investors submitted a total of 99 eligible questions. Topics ranged from What is short selling? to What are the pros and cons of borrowing money to invest? to How do I research whether an investment company is legitimate?  Congratulations to Irene Seto of Calgary who was the grand prize winner!

When asked why she participated in the contest Irene said, “learning how to take care of your money is an important life skill, but not an easy one to learn. As a young investor, I am always looking for ways to learn more about investing and saving for my future.”  November is Financial Literacy Month and there couldn’t be a better time to take charge of your finances and investments.  Here are some quick ways to get started:

  • Take a Basics of Investing course  - sign up for one that the ASC offers at Metro Continuing Education in Edmonton and at Mount Royal University in Calgary.
  • Check out our investor resources  - find out how to choose and work with financial advisers, how to know what investments are right for you, how to avoid investment fraud and more with our free and unbiased brochures and reading materials.
  •  Confirm registration  - do some research on anyone offering to sell you or advise you on an investment opportunity.
  •  Check background -  see whether a company or individual offering an investment is or has been the subject of enforcement action.

To see the questions submitted during the contest and our answers visit the Your Investing Questions page in our For Investors section. To find out where to send your questions about securities and investments now that the contest is over visit our Contact Us page.
