Investor resolutions for 2012

We all have areas in our lives that we know could use a little more attention. For many Canadians, finances are at the top of the list. The start of the new year is an opportune time to take stock of where you are with your investments and to come up with a plan to help you get to where you would like to be.

Here are three simple investor resolutions that you can adopt for 2012:

  1. I will learn more about investing. Learning more about investing will help you. Take some time to browse through our free ASC brochures and easy to use online resources. You can also take The Basics of Investing course offered at Mount Royal University (Calgary) and Metro Continuing Education (Edmonton).
  2. I will consider the help of a registered financial adviser. Some people go it alone, but for many the qualified recommendations of someone registered with the ASC is the preferred way to go when it comes to managing investments. Watch our online tutorial Who’s Taking Care of Your Money? and confirm registration of anyone offering you an investment.
  3. I will take time to do my own research when considering investment opportunities. Many people feel pressured to make quick decisions when it comes to their investments, especially with Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and income tax deadlines looming. Plan ahead and don’t put yourself in situations where you feel put on the spot to make an immediate decision. Read about investment seminars and cold calls and be sure to make use of ASC’s information about whether a company or individual is the subject of current, past, or upcoming enforcement proceedings.

Research shows that if you tell people that you are making a commitment, you are more likely to stick to it. So share these resolutions with friends and family by sending them a link to this blog, and challenge them to join you in making 2012 a
well-informed and hopefully prosperous new year!
