What you want, what you need and what you have

It's easy to get caught up in the idea of making money, and to forget about planning for your future. Why not take some time to get clear about your financial goals? This is a great place to start.

What you can do: Write down your personal financial goals and values. Talk about them with your partner or your family. Then assign corresponding dollar amounts - you might be surprised by what you see on paper. Next, take some time to calculate your net worth​. This will give you an idea of where you are right now with your finances. How does this measure up with the financial goals you had identified? Chances are you have some work to do. From here, you will be able to decide where your attention and money needs to be focused in order to meet both your short- term and long- term​ goals.
