Recap: Fall Investor Education Campaign

​This fall, we’ve hit the road to educate Albertans on how to keep their investments safe at some fun and interactive locations. We kicked off Investor Education Month (October) with a pop-up coffee shop at the Edmonton Fall Home Show. At the show, we offered coffee, tea and informative promotional items to approximately 2,200 visitors who visited our booth. It was great to have so many take the time to learn about the importance of “checking first” before making a decision to invest and where to find the ASC’s free tools and resources on how to do so.


November marked the start of Financial Literacy Month and to help Albertans increase theirs, we took over the Denim & Smith Barbershop in downtown Calgary and turned it into the CheckFirst Barbershop to remind Calgarians that “not all scams are cut and dry.” On November 5, haircuts, beard trims and clean ups were all courtesy of the ASC. Calgary’s own a capella group, the Heebee Jeebees, transformed into a barbershop quartet and provided entertainment during the event. ASC staff were on hand to explain why bad investments aren’t always obvious and how to avoid getting investments “thinned” by fraud. During the two-hour event, 40 people received haircuts and shaves and approximately 250 people stopped by.
