CAPITAL IDEAS 2010

What makes Canada’s venture market the envy of the world? Learn more about the factors affecting the success of private and emerging public markets in BC and Alberta and of the small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that depend on those markets. Join us for Capital Ideas 2010 where you can spend a ½ day networking with a distinguished panel of experts in small-business financing and regulation and gain a better understanding of:

• Canada’s unique markets for emerging businesses, including what makes this aspect of our economy garner international acclaim.
• the size and scope of activities in the private market in BC and Alberta based on new research being released that morning
• the balance regulators must strike between not getting in the way of critical capital formation for these businesses in the private markets and protecting investors
• the role played by venture capitalists and brokers in financing these small businesses, both privately and publicly
• the challenges facing small public companies in complying with regulatory requirements
• the international impact of these emerging companies

Capital Ideas 2010 may count as continuing education for a number of different professions. We will provide certificates of attendance for all those who need proof of attendance to claim continuing education credits. To obtain a certificate, you will need to sign in and sign out at the conference.

New this year, we will have two speakers, one before each part of the panel discussion.

Our first speaker will be Jock Finlayson, Executive Vice President, Policy, Business Council of BC. Jock will provide an economic overview on the importance of the SME market to BC's and Alberta's economies and the Canadian economy as a whole.

Our second speaker, after the break, will be John McCoach, President, TSX Venture Exchange. John will give an update on the exchange, its role in providing access to capital for companies at various stages of development, and in offering a credible market where investors of all sizes can make venture investments.

UBC law professor Dr. Cristie Ford will moderate a panel with:

• Darrin Hopkins, Vice President, Public Venture Capital Division, Macquarie Private Wealth Inc.
• Hans Knapp, Partner and General Counsel, Yaletown Venture Partners

• Bill Rice, Chair, Alberta Securities Commission
• John Wright, President and CEO, Petrobank Energy and Resources Ltd.

Coffee will be available starting at 8:00 am and the program will start at 8:30 am. Lunch will be available following the event for you to enjoy on site or to take with you.
